Ekokotu Laments Over Ughelli Crisis In Delta State

An ex-militant leader in Delta State, Abraham Ekokotu, has warned of the impending crisis in Ughelli if the amount of compensation paid by the Shell Petroleum Development Company to the community was not made public.

Ekokotu, who is the chief security officer of the Olomu kingdom, Ughelli South area of Delta State, warned that the Shell oil spill compensation was capable of tearing Oviri-Olomu in Ughelli apart.
The ex-militant, who spoke at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ secretariat in Warri,
called for a joint investigation by environmental experts and government agencies into the matter.
He said the oil spillage, which occurred last year, had caused serious harm and damage to the community, but lamented that those who were mostly affected by the spillage had not benefitted from the compensation.
He said, “The SPDC, after many months, has decided to repair the affected 16 T/L OGARA-OTORO MAGNET MARK M/P7 and MP8, but compensation issue is now causing a brewing crisis.
“Certain community leaders have negotiated certain sums with SPDC as compensation, which is still shrouded in secrecy. Efforts to make the leadership to publicly explain the terms of compensation to the community have pitted the youths against the leadership.” The ex-militant leader urged the oil company to immediately discuss with all affected stakeholders before cleaning the spillage.
He insisted that an adequate compensation should be paid to individual community members “before and after” the contract for the clean-up of the oil spillage is executed.
