Federal Government have been urged by Prof. Ganiyu to ban the importation of skin bleaching creams



Prof. Ganiyu Arinola, an immunologist and Head Department of Chemical Pathology, University College Hospital Ibandan has called on the attention of Federal Government on the need to ban the importation of skin bleaching creams into Nigeria.

In an interview that took place on Wenesday in Ibandan, Oyo state, Arinola who made the call revealed that for the health of Nigerians to be safeguarded, it is very necessary for such a measure be taken by the Federal Government.

While speaking, Prof. Arinola described the act of bleaching the skin as the loss of pigment or lightening of the skin.

Adding that the use of bleaching creams by Nigerians, weakens the skin immunity at the same time the body.

“Commonly used bleaching creams are: Movate, Skin-light, Make-Me Light and many more that have flooded the Nigerian market,” he added.

The Professor revealed that skin bleaching is done by black skinned people both male and female which is predominantly practiced among the younger generation for the purpose of cosmetic or fame.

Adding that the act of bleaching was also due the misconceptions about fair skin seen as superior to dark skin.

He stated that the consequences of bleaching is that the creams disrupts the normal immunologic functions of the skin.


“We carried out different studies at different times in the laboratory, on dogs, cockroaches, mites and mouse.


“The studies all showed that skin lightening creams caused disruption in the normal protective functions of the human skin and certain blood parameters


“I therefore urge those involved in this harmful practice to desist from doing so,” advised the Professor.
