Stop eating bush meat and dead animals , Ministry of Health warns Nigerians of monkeypox virus

Avoid eating dead animals, bushmeat including monkeys ? Ministry of Health alert Nigerians against monkeypox virus

Federal Ministry of Health has advised Nigerians to desisting from eating  dead animals and  bushmeat, including monkeys following the outbreak of monkeypox virus in Bayelsa state.

This information was passed to the public on Thursday by Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health .

In a statement released through the director of media and public relations in the ministry, Mr Boade Akinola, the minister stated that although, there is no cure or vaccine for the disease but that there is no cause for Nigerians to be afraid.

The statement read in part: “He (Adewole) said the virus was mild and there was no known treatment and no preventive vaccines, hence the public should be at alert and avoid crowded places as much as possible.

“He advised the public to avoid eating dead animals, bushmeat and particularly bush monkeys.”

The statement stated that

 “The symptoms include headache, fever, back pains and in advanced cases, rashes bigger than those caused by chicken pox.”

In his statement, he revealed that the Ministry has sent to the World Health Organisation (laboratory) in Senegal, test samples for analysis and they are waiting for the results. Advising Nigerians to go for immediate medical care the moment  anyone experiences any of those symptoms mentioned above.

10 lives have been lost since the outbreak in Bayelsa and a doctor has been quarantined after contracting it from patients he was treating.
